About the Leonard Florence Center for Living

Bringing the Green House® Model to Greater Boston

With our continued commitment to the enhancement of life for elders and individuals with disabling conditions, the Chelsea Jewish Foundation developed a unique and revolutionary care model for those requiring long-term skilled nursing care and short-term rehabilitation.

Opening in February 2010, the Leonard Florence Center for Living (LFCL)—part of a recent national movement known as the Green House® Project—is the first urban Green House in the country, serving as a beacon of hope for change in long-term nursing care.

The LFCL Green House®, named after the late Chelsea-born philanthropist Leonard Florence, is a state-of-the-art, six-story, 100-bed, skilled nursing home with extra emphasis placed on the word home. The LFCL, which overlooks the scenic Boston Harbor, consists of ten 7,000-square-foot condo-style Green Houses, with each home containing ten private bedrooms complete with bath and shower, arranged around a dining area, open kitchen and common living room where residents may relax and develop a sense of community.

The LFCL will house the elderly and those requiring short-term rehabilitation. In addition, two residences will be home for individuals living with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and multiple sclerosis (MS), where they will have independent mobility full of meaningful choices and dignity.

Nursing Home of the Future … Now

A radical departure from traditional skilled nursing homes, LFCL applies the Green House® model, which alters the size and interior design of each residence, combining vibrant outdoor space and aesthetically appealing features one would find in the comforts of their own home.

But the physical transformation is only one element of the Green House® model as staff responsibilities are far different from those in a conventional nursing home. Each house has its own dedicated staff of nursing assistants known as shahbazim—certified caregivers who are specially trained under the umbrella of the Green House® model in CPR, first aid, culinary arts, and communication.

A separate clinical support team—which includes nurses, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, physicians, dieticians, pharmacists, podiatrists and optometrists—visits the houses regularly to provide clinical services.

The location—Admiral’s Hill in Chelsea, just on the outskirts of Boston—is convenient for medical resources as well as social and cultural events. In short, every effort—from the ground up—is dedicated to making the Leonard Florence Center a real home.
